Narasimhan . Good stuff. My estimate is that somewhere around end of 2014, solar will become the second largest in terms of installed capacity, at about 5000 MW (assuming the 750 MW JNNSM quickly goes through and so do state projects in TN and AP. What do you think? Like

Madhavan Nampoothiri . I will go with a more conservative estimate of about 4 GW at the end of 2014. This will include(hopefully) the 300 MW of CSP projects under JNNSM Phase 1, 750 MW in Phase 2, 750 MW from TN and AP, and another 200 MW the rest put together. Like

Narasimhan . What certainly looks cool is that solar installations actually surpassed those for wind in Aug 2013. Even given this is a real lean time for wind, this is a fairly significant happening Like

Narasimhan . Roshan, I'd say BIPV is in its very nascent stage world over, and there's hardly any economic business case right now ( costs very high), so it's just those innovators who are trying it out. I hence request you to be careful while setting expectations for growth. Like

Narasimhan . karan, sorry i dont hv historical data, this is based on the solar map and the general knowledge available about sunny days in each region of India...you may want to talk to some in IIT B solar research centre for more precise data - Link Like

Madhusudhan Rao . Karan, for a project of significant investment I would suggest using a professional software like Link Alternatively, data from NASA might help - Link . Talking to experienced professionals would help as they can provide inputs on issues at ground level. Like

Karan Gupta . Thanks Mr Rao, basically i was looking for real time number, from some one has actually set up a plant in mumbai or near by. because i guess mumbai gets rain for almost 3 months ..so is it right to do the maths on 275 days at Rs 8 as electricity tariff. Like

Madhusudhan Rao . Karan, I have not setup a plant in Mumbai, so I cannot vouch for actual numbers. But based on the satellite data, there are 157 cloud free days in a year (22-year avg.) and there are 57 no-Sun days. So, it is clear that we can take somewhere between 157 to 308 days. Therefore, 275 days seems to be fair assumption. Like

Madhavan Nampoothiri posted: MNRE releases Solar PV plant performance data for June 2013 - Link 4 years ago

Replies for this pozt

Narasimhan . Hi, thanks for the link...useful...what's the CUF one can expect for places such has Paramakudi in TN? I stated about 23% to a question in this regard, but the Kolkata businessman I was talking to said 23% was too high for TN...he said their plant yielding 1.7 million units per MW (in Rajasthan) has a CUF of less than 20%, which doesnt tally with the MNRE data you have presented...opinions welcome Like

Madhavan Nampoothiri . Narsi - The data presented here is on monthly basis. So, we will have to wait for a full year to get the annual CUF. Another point is that even in the data available, the CUF is varying within a wide range - 16% to 26%. I do not know what to make of it right now. So, the guy you spoke to is not contradicting the MNRE data. Like

Madhavan Nampoothiri . Another possibility could be due to the usage of Thin Films. I heard that the Thin film module efficiencies are typically underrated since their performance drops drastically after about 12-18 months. This means that the performance of the plants will be very high in the first year, and then drops quite significantly. This is purely anecdotal and I don't have evidence to prove or disprove this. Like

Madhavan Nampoothiri . Regarding Paramakudi, you can refer to the plant performance of RL clean power, in Sivaganga District. This location is only about 50 km from Paramakudi town. RL Clean Power has been showing CUF of about 20% on a monthly basis and it uses a-Si Thin Film modules. Like
